WiredCommute today announced it is working with a coalition of public agencies, transit operators, private businesses, benefit providers and concerned citizens to support maintaining commuter benefits at their present levels. Without immediate Congressional action the transit cap of the Commuter Benefit will be reduced nearly in half at the end of 2011, effectively creating a tax increase for the over 2.7 million public transit and vanpool commuters that currently use this benefit.
In December 2010 as part of the extension of the “Bush/Middle Class Tax Cuts, Congress extended the transit benefit pre-tax cap increase from $120 per month to $230 per month, for one year, matching the amount allowed for parking expenses.
WiredCommute and the Commuter Benefits Works for Us Coalition launched a website www.CommuterBenefitsWorkforUs.com to rally support and allow commuters and their employers to voice their opinion to their elected officials. The Coalition consists of other transit benefit providers, as well as transit and vanpool providers, employers associations and others to protect the transit portion of the commuter benefit.
